The Game

When the jocks used to say, “Don’t hate the player, hate the game” I never knew what they meant. What game? Is it on Nintendo? Can I walk into EB and get a copy? But throughout the years, bits and pieces slowly came together and I realised what they meant but still wasn’t quite sure what it was – until I read The Game by Neil Strauss.

The first time I heard about this book was early 2006 on the radio and only ordered it a fortnight ago. I couldn’t believe that there’s a secret seduction community made up by Pick Up Artists (PUA). I thought it was a joke. There are guys out there who turn picking up girls into a science. And this is what the seduction community is all about. They go out and interact with women with an array of memorised responses that will bring them closer to closing the deal – most often with a phone number or a kiss. They then return to their dark lairs, and break down and analyse the “sessions” they’ve just had. Why? So they can learn from it and use it in their next pick up. Astonishing or sad? I don’t know.

I couldn’t put the book down. I read the 450pages in a week and a half. I read it every chance I could, often sneaking in a few pages whenever I could and spending a shit load of time in the toilet obsessively reading every single word. Be wary though, the book isn’t about picking up. It’s far from a How-to-pick-up book, but is instead about Strauss’s two year experience with the seduction community.

A few familiar names are mentioned in the book like *cough cough* David DeAngelo and his “Cocky & Funny method”. Oh yes, the book is full of all methods like Mystery’s Method and all these other hilariously named methods that I can’t be bothered mentioning here (… because I’m lazy).

It’s not quite surprising that most of the PUA were nerds who redeemed themselves with a new wardrobe and whiter teeth. These were dudes who were constantly rejected and/or ignored by women all their life, and now they’re constantly taking women home. Oh and get this, the noobs are called AFC’s (Average Frustrated Chumps).

And now here’s the thing. I don’t know whether if this PUA community is sad, or super dooper cool.

There’s a similar thing in Japan called Nanpa which is when guys devote themselves to picking up girls on the street. In a similar way they’ll study their moves, eventually improve their ‘hit rate’ and gain greater respect.

I’m still at the “girls run screaming ‘ronald mcdonald rapist man’ when i say hello” stage.

LOL, I had no idea that that was what the book was about!

Definitely an interesting world though… who knows Johnny, maybe someday (or in another life*), you can go out and PU a ton of HBs too. Just work on your kino technique eh? Hey, I’ll even be your wingman! ;)

(* don’t know if you might be reading this Susan)
