A tabbed future

With programs becoming more powerful each and every day, so has the rise in abundance of program windows, palettes and whatever in between. With browsers, gone are the days of countless windows cluttering your Taskbar. These days, tabs are the way of the future in keeping everything neat and tidy. They’ve made their way into most applications (the creative ones from Adobe and Macromedia at least…) and they’re a terrific way to display countless windows of information within the same space. They aren’t new to the internet nerd, but to more than 75% the people I know, they haven’t heard of this wonderous technology at all - I’m shocked.

Honestly I can’t imagine a browsing world without tabs, they just make everything so… well… tidy. What baffles me the most is that they’re not implemented into the main file browser/explorer in Windows XP and OSX - the most basic of information and data organisation. Tabless file browsing in OSX is atrocious since all the Finder windows are everywhere and I would’ve thought Microsoft would’ve implemented tabs into the new Vista but I guess they copy OSX’s shortcomings as well. If you’re going to throw tabs into the new IE, why not throw it into the file broswer as well? This could’ve been something for the Vista fanboys to be proud of (I know I would be).

I use OSX 95% of the time, and because tabs have made such an impact on my life I’ve even purchased a 3rd party app so that I can now browse my files with tabs. The app is pretty solid, and although it has a few things that could be improved upon, it’s certainly made file browsing such an amazing experience. And what do I use on XP for my tabbed-file-browsing needs? smartFTP…

lmao.

Uh, I thought you had a brain… why don’t you use it? Because Microsoft has maintained the status quo with regards to the Windows Explorer window model they are copying from OSX? Seriously, fuck you.

Now to address you actual subject matter…

What exactly are you doing that requires browsing multiple Windows Explorer or Finder windows in tabs?

I find the vast majority of time I have different windows open is either for completely unrelated tasks — in which case I want separate windows — or I’m copying or moving files via drag and drop — when I want my windows tiled or otherwise arranged so I can see them both at the same time.

I certainly don’t disagree that tabbed modes of Windows Explorer and the Finder could be added for those who want it, but I’m just curious what you are using it for.

    No, fuck you! Relax brother.

What I was TRYING to say was one of the shortcomings of OSX was the lack of tabbing in its file browser. If Microsoft was here to innovate, or even make an evolution, why not add tabbing to its file broswer? It’d be one step above. I’m not saying it copied OSX’s file browser as if Windows never had a file broswer before, but why do only what OSX has done so far? Why not throw someting at the Apple fanboys and say, “Ha! We did it before you!”

Anyway to the answer to ur question: I think it really depends on the user. You have ppl who live with tabs and those who don’t. I think the vast majority would have no tabs. But for me, I like to keep things clean and in one space. It speeds up productivity for me, instead of sifting through all these windows all over the place (it gets very annoying in OSX).

The Drag and Drop function isn’t eliminated in tab-enabled file browsers either. All you do is drag your file to your destination tab, then to your destination folder. It may be an extra Action, but it sure beats a messy interface.

So in short tabs may really be a preference. For me it’s a tool to minimise frustration and maximise productivity.
